Problems Faced by LGBTQ+ Community in India

The visibility and activism of the LGBTQ+ community in India have been rising for the past few years. The number of Indian youths who are accepting their queer identities today has increased. Still, when it comes to obtaining rights and acceptance based on sexual orientation, it depicts a struggle on different levels.

India has a rich historical and cultural diversity. Yet, the problems faced by LGBTQ community keep growing as they encounter numerous challenges and obstacles even within the confines of family, let alone school or workplace.

While people around the world were celebrating LGBTQ Pride Month, India was still struggling with Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which considered homosexuality a criminal offense. In 2018, the Indian Supreme Court overturned the law, recognizing the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

But is India really making significant progress for the queer community? Well, let’s throw some light on this topic here:

Challenges Faced by LGBTQ Community in India:

The struggles of LGBTQ community in India in rural and urban areas are quite different from each other. While urban India is still making efforts to move forward from “special treatment” to “equal treatment,” Rural India Is still fixated on finding a “cure for homosexuality.”

Compared to the lesbian and transgender communities, the problems faced by gay men in India have significantly decreased due to social media and corporate initiatives supporting LGBTQ+ rights. However, the people supporting and helping the community are still only a small portion of the country.

While some people participate in events flaunting support through LGBTQ Tshirts, a large portion of the population still views the community as strange and distinctly different. This increases the challenges and obstacles faced by this community, such as:

Social Discrimination:

One of the most challenging problems faced by homosexual and LGBTQ+ communities in India is the lack of acceptance and understanding of the community. The community is severely impacted by prejudice and exclusion as they don’t fit into the cultural norms, religious beliefs, and values of the maximum population.

Discrimination peaks in rural areas, making it difficult for the community to live safely and openly. At times, some even have to leave their family and home due to discrimination.

Employment Opportunities Hurdles:

Lack of opportunity is one of the significant problems faced by LGBTQ community, as discrimination becomes a major barrier to accessing employment. Often queer youth face discrimination in the workplace due to their sexual orientation, and this leads to major financial and social inequality.

In comparison to others, the queer community lacks regular employment opportunities and has fewer possibilities for equal treatment in the workplace.

Inequality in Health Facilities:

Health inequality is one of the severe problems faced by LGBTQ in India as the stigma and discrimination that is associated with gender, identity, and sexual orientation lead to struggles in obtaining proper treatment. Several individuals in the community are often victims of hate crimes, harassment, and bullying, which also leads to mental health issues.

The community is unable to access a wide range of services and is often unaware of their rights, which further prevents them from receiving necessary treatment and care.

Education and Financial Troubles:

Lack of education is one of the most severe challenges faced by LGBTQ youth, as the persistent bullying, prejudice, and harassment often lead queer students to drop out of institutions such as schools and colleges to end the permanent source of humiliation. Early school abandonment is a serious issue.

Without proper education, resources, and support, the community suffers from limited access to education and limited job opportunities that leads to financial uncertainty.

Solutions Focused on the Issues of LGBT Community in India:

Over the years, the queer community has been supported by the youth with a vision of revolutionary change in society. Many people support the group by wearing pride wear  in events to show their love and respect for the community. However, the population of people who don’t support the LGBTQ+ community is larger. Here are a few things that can be done to reduce the discrimination and stigma faced by the community:

  • The government and civil society organizations should curate educational programs that promote the acceptance and understanding of the queer community. These programs should back the idea of equal rights and dignity for the community.
  • The government should launch several policies and schemes in the healthcare sector to make treatment and immediate care accessible to the LGBTQ+ community. It must also work on providing training to healthcare providers in offering respectful care to queer patients.
  • An exclusive support service should be established for the LGBTQ+ community to provide counseling and mental health services.
  • Programs and policies should be launched and implemented to provide equal employment opportunities for the LGBTQ+ community, which can help support their employment and eliminate workplace discrimination.
